Christ Church, Anglican of Meaford, Ontario seeks a creative and technically competent person to assume keyboard and choral music leadership in their parish community as Muic Director. The congregation is vibrant and welcoming with a strong focus on outreach, community, and liturgy. The sanctuary has a well-maintained William F. Legge Pipe Organ (2-manuals), a Heintzman & Co. grand piano, and a Yamaha Portable Grand DGX-650 keyboard. With a small choir of volunteer members, one rehearsal per week and one Sunday service, in addition to weekly meetings with the parish’s rector, it is estimated that this part-time position will require 7 hours a week. Remuneration will be commensurate with experience and qualifications as described in the RCCO Salary Guidelines. The Music Director will ensure worship services are enhanced through the use of music (instrumental and choral) so that the congregation is encouraged to participate. All activities associated with this position must be achieved in a manner consistent with the parish’s mission, goals and objectives. All policies and practices of the Diocese of Huron and Christ Church, Meaford must be known and adhered to, with particular attention paid to the Safe Church Policies.
Provide leadership in a ministry of music that is sensitive to the Anglican tradition, the goals and practices of the parish, and the changes of liturgical seasons.
In consultation with the Rector, including a weekly meeting (usually 0.5-1 hr), select appropriate hymns, anthems, musical settings for the liturgy, and instrumental pieces for all Sunday services, as well as select mid-week Principal Feast and Holy Day services throughout the year (Christmas Eve, Ash Wednesday, Easter Triduum, Epiphany, etc.).
Prepare and play organ/piano/keyboard music as required at services of worship.
Direct and support choir members and cantors, facilitating rehearsals at mutually beneficial times.
Oversee the care of the parish’s organ, piano, and keyboards, making recommendations to the wardens regarding required maintenance and repair.
Maintain the parish’s library of music and ensure music is made available for choir members as needed.
For special services, such as weddings and funerals, should the provision of music be requested, the Music Director shall be given the right of first refusal for providing said music. Music shall be selected in consultation with the Rector and relevant parties. An additional fee (minimum of $150) shall be paid to the Music Director for any funeral or wedding service worked. Should the Music Director be unable or unavailable to play for said special service, an outside musician may be contracted by the parish to play for the specific special service.
Dependent upon the qualifications and experience of the applicant for an average of 7 hours per week, including rehearsal, meeting and practice time, guided by the Royal Canadian College of Organists (RCCO) salary recommendations.
The Church shall provide the Music Director with access to reasonable administrative assistance from the Parish Administrator (without charge to the Music Director) to support the Music Director in fulfilling the above duties.
Through the license of the Bishop of Huron, the Rector is the Chief Liturgical Officer of the parish, which includes ultimate decisions on all liturgical and musical offerings included within a service of worship at Christ Church.
